Born in 1929 in Shunde, Canton Province, China, Chan is a self-taught artist who defies authority. At the age of 10, he moved to Madagascar where he carved a name for himself in the gemstone industry. Chan began painting at the age of 30. He frees himself from the confinements of academic principles, and his works impart a sense of freshness and simplicity. The vibrant and dynamic colours of his paintings are reminiscent of the precious gems such as sapphire, ruby and emerald found in Madagascar.

Chan became a full-time artist at the age of 50. His works embody the essence of both East and West, and that of classic and modern art. Chan's figurative paintings often reflect the leisurely lifestyle of the Malagasy people; his abstract paintings bear a strong resemblance to the concept of "imagery" from traditional Chinese aesthetics. The unique mixture of intense colours and free, forceful brushstrokes give his paintings a distinctive style.

Currently, Chan is one of the most important artists in the world of Madagascar's art. He has held several exhibitions in Madagascar and Hong Kong. His works have received critical acclaim in the art circle, and are widely collected by art lovers in America and Europe.

Chan offered 40 paintings to UNICEF in Madagascar in 1994, in support of the Malagasy children and mothers.
